A time for gratitude

Citizens line up to speak at Children's Levy Public Hearing

One month ago today, the last of the 54,290 Whatcom County voters cast their ballots to say Yes for Whatcom Kids! Who would have guessed that in the month following Election Day, we’d be working to make sure every ballot was counted, would win by 20 votes, and would end up back in Council Chambers advocating for accountability and for the funds voted on by our community?

Hundreds of you flooded county leaders‘ inboxes, dozens of you showed up in chambers. We ended this election season with a big win for kids and for our community. And we have you to thank for that, along with the County Council members who also voted yes for kids, and yes to respecting the will of the people.

Each of us living in Whatcom County will contribute to improving the well being of children and families across the county.

Because of you…

  • There will be a fully funded Healthy Children’s Fund for at least the next 10 years.

  • Children and families will have access to child care.

  • They will have access to mental and behavioral health services, and early parenting support.

  • Children and families will be diverted away from homelessness.

On behalf of the children and families in Whatcom County, and on behalf of the entire decade of advocacy that led to the Yes for Whatcom Kids campaign - thank you for showing up, and for supporting this work! This is what it looks like to live in a community that shows up for kids.

Today is a time for gratitude. Will you email the Whatcom County Council to say THANK YOU for making brave decisions all along the way to make this possible? This win is theirs too and we are grateful they put this on the ballot, and then voted for the full amount voters supported. Let’s fill their inbox with gratitude.

We look forward to sharing updates as the implementation plan is developed and projects are made possible through the Healthy Children’s Fund. So stay tuned for progress!

With great hope, gratitude, and optimism,
The Yes for Whatcom Kids Campaign Team
